The Hamangia Foundation is named after “The Thinker of Hamangia”, a small sculpture, belonging to the ceramic culture of the Neolithic (5000-4600 BC) discovered on the bank of the Danube river in Romania.

The Thinker of Hamangia's anonymous artist has created a work of art totally different from the utilitarian objects and the religious figures of the Neolithic. For the first time, with The Thinker of Hamangia, the aesthetics takes prevalence.

The Hamangia Foundation is formed to stimulate and encourage the creation of ceramic sculpture bearing on the greatness and uniqueness of this old minuscule work.

The Foundation is offering grants to artists working in ceramic sculpture, integrated in nature or incorporated in architecture, giving them the opportunity to devote additional time and resources to the development of their work. Artists may be at all stage of career development, from emerging artists to well established names. The grant is based on merit only.

The Foundation is going to maintain a significant involvement in activities designed to promote the art of Patriciu Mateescu including, but not limited to, the display of his work to the general public, loaning pieces of his work for exhibition, making such artwork available for study for scholars and students of art history, producing a monograph of his work for complementary placement in institutes of higher education, libraries and/or museums in the United States.
